Self-medication, a cry for help

Self-medication, a cry for help

Did you know that most people “self-medicate” in one form or another?

At Fort Worth Christian Counseling we define “self-medication” as the introduction of a substance into the human body to dull emotional pain.

Self-medication can be introduced in various ways.

  1. Alcohol
  2. Drugs
  3. Pornography
  4. Illicit sex (fornication/adultery)
  5. Cutting

I have given you the basics but the list is endless.

The next question that must be answered is “why would a person need to do something like that”?

At Fort Worth Christian Counseling we understand that life itself can be painful… extremely painful at times.

Everyone who self-medicates has a good reason!

(Note! Self medication can eventually cause irreparable damage)

This may seem like a shock to you… A therapist saying that people who self-medicate have a good reason.

If you’ve never been driven to the point of self-medication by living a painful life, it would be difficult to explain.

Imagine opening your eyes in the morning and not wanting to wake up because of the emotional pain.

And when you do manage to make it out of bed (which isn’t all that often if you are clinically depressed),

the agony of taking your next breath is sometimes beyond explanation.

You simply want the agony to stop but you’ve tried everything you know.

The beginning of self-medication

At this point we must understand that an individual who self-medicates realizes that it doesn’t work all that well.

It is better than nothing but sometimes nothing is all you will get.

At Fort Worth Christian Counseling we understand why an individual would self-medicate

There is no shame or condemnation here… but simply learning to put one foot in front of the other to move forward.

We work with the five temperaments…and we have learned that certain temperaments tend to self-medicate more than others.

We know there are very good reasons why people self-medicate, and we know the way out.

This is a step-by-step process that we are offering but a step by step process that will lead you to freedom.

This is a professional bible-based process that depends on the word of God exclusively.

If you are seeking the way out perhaps we can help?
