Talk to your children

Talk to your children…it’s fun!

I have seen a trend lately that I think is a bit concerning.

You have More than likely seen it.. You go walking through the grocery store or the mall and you see a mother with a young child in the grocery cart.

The mother is attentively looking for the items that she needs for her family. The question I have is what is the child doing?

More often I see the child sitting in the cart with a tablet playing a game or watching cartoons for whatever happens to be on the tablet screen at the time.

I see the same thing at restaurants. The parents are staring at their cellphones their children are staring at their cellphones.

If that child is a toddler… most of the time they have a tablet in front of them playing a game or watching their cartoons.

Communicate! The words you speak to your children will help them to develop happy healthy lives

Sometimes I have to wonder How many hours during the day does the parent communicate with their child?

I remember when my children were young ( This was before the advent of handheld computers or even cell phones)

When we would walk through the stores we would talk to our children… we would actually have conversations with them.

When you communicate with your child even if that child is an infant or a toddler what you

Are creating isn’t just a relationship you are actually wiring that child’s  neuro-pathways in their brain.

I see the same thing at restaurants. The parents are staring at their cellphones their children are staring at their cellphones.

If that child is a toddler… most of the time they have a tablet in front of them playing a game or watching their cartoons.

As a therapist I am very concerned at what this is doing to our young people.

I realize the this might not be easy if you are a parent, but my suggestion is to have cell phone free times in your home.

Perhaps when you are eating together everyone turn off their phone.

If you are taking your toddler to the grocery store talk to him or her…

Yes! You can actually carry on conversations with your children!

This idea may be something that you haven’t attempted yet but believe me it can be done!
